Why do I need a licensed contractor, can't I just hire anyone?

By hiring a licensed contractor, you are giving yourself a proven professional. In order to be licensed contractor, a state exam and years of experience are required, in addition to the referral from an existing contractor. Contractors are required to maintain certain levels of insurance and submit to exhaustive background checks.

While you can hire anyone, it is not advised. Using someone who is not licensed opens the door to uninsured builders and handyman services as well as workers operating outside the laws. As the client you have no way to verify the experience, insurance and quality of work by hiring an unknown.

How do I know my contractor is licensed?

Your contractor should offer to show you his state contractor's license. This license number should appear on his/her contracts and business cards. You can also visit www.cslb.ca.gov and check your contractor's license number and history.

I thought contractors only built houses; will they do handyman repairs and projects that don't involve a new home being built?

Yes. While general contractors do in fact build homes, they are able to perform smaller construction projects as well as handyman and repair services.
